Free Crochet Pattern: Festive Mug Rug

In the Spirit of the Holiday Season and all things gift-giving, here’s a free and fun crochet pattern!  This is a beginner level project that works up in an afternoon – just in time for a handmade hostess gift as you celebrate with loved ones!

The coasters are a 4×4 inch square.

To crochet a 4×4 inch square in this criss-cross pattern, you will need:

  • Size K 6.50mm crochet hook
  • Worsted weight (med sz 4 yarn). I used my favorite crafty yarn – Red Heart Super Saver in Paddy Green and Burgundy.
  • Tapestry/yarn needle (to weave in loose ends neatly)

Instructions:

Ch11

R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across.  Count 10 sc total this row.  Turn.

R2: Ch3, sk 1st and 2nd sc, dc1 in next sc, then working backwards, dc1 in the sc preceding the last dc made, *sk1 sc, dc1 in next sc, then working backwards, dc1 in the sc preceding the last dc made, rep from * across ending dc1 in 1ch.  Turn.

R3: Ch1 (counts as 1st sc), sk 1st stitch, sc in 2nd dc and in each across, ending sc1 in top of 3ch.  Count 10 sc this row.  Turn.

Rep rows 2 and 3 twice more to complete your square.  Weave in your loose ends.

Fringe:

For 1 coaster, cut 10 pieces of red yarn and 10 pieces of green yarn at roughly 7-8 inch lengths.

Use your hook to slip a red and green strip of yarn together, two at a time, through a corner sc space of your coaster.

Then make a slip knot with your hook to secure it on. See pictures for visuals.

Repeat the process, two strands at a time, one red and one green, along all ten sc stitches on this side.

Then do the same for the other side of the coaster.

Snip your fringe to the desired length.
